The UK’s narrowest new cars revealed

If you have a tight parking space or a titchy garage, buying a narrow car will help. But which models should you consider?...

Ford Fiesta long-term test review

The narrowest small cars

5. Ford Fiesta

Width 1735mm

What Car? rating 4/5

The Fiesta may be bigger than before, but it's slightly narrower than other new rivals, such as the Volkswagen Polo, which is 1751mm wide. On top of that, it's superb to drive, smart inside and well equipped.

4. Skoda Fabia

Width 1732mm

What Car? rating 4/5

The UK’s narrowest new cars revealed

Even though it’s narrower than many rivals, the Fabia is roomier inside than the Ford Fiesta and Mazda 2. Its tall roofline ensures there’s plenty of head room, and its doors open wide, making it easy to get in and out. The Fabia is good to drive, too. The only area where it doesn’t match rivals is interior trim with more hard plastic surfaces than the Fiest and Volkswagen Polo.

3. Mini hatchback

Width 1727mm

What Car? rating 4/5

The UK’s narrowest new cars revealed

Until the five-door version was introduced, it was hard to seriously consider the Mini as a practical option. The five-door costs more than the three-door, but it provides more head and leg room even though it’s no wider. In addition, all Minis have a classy interior, lots of personalisation opportunities and the promise of a fun driving experience, all in a desirable package.

2. Kia Rio

Width 1720mm

What Car? rating 4/5

The UK’s narrowest new cars revealed

The Rio is one of the biggest cars in this class, but it’s also one of the narrowest, making it a great option for anyone with a small drive or parking bay. It’s roomier inside than a Skoda Fabia and it has one of the biggest boots of any small hatchback. In addition, the Rio is well priced and comes with a lot of kit. Only the lumpy ride around town and uninspiring handling count against it.

1. Honda Jazz

Width 1694mm

What Car? rating Rated 4 out of 5

The UK’s narrowest new cars revealed

The Honda Jazz has a reputation as the favourite car of Britain's grandparents, and it’s a strong seller precisely because it's easily the most spacious and practical among its peers. Not only does it have more than enough space for four adults, it also has ‘magic’ rear seats that fold forwards should you require a humungous boot.
