Infotainment systems

Audi Q5

By far the best infotainment system. You scroll through the on-screen menus by turning a big dial between the front seats and then press down to make a selection. It’s as simple as that. Our test car came with the optional (£1100) Technology Pack, which stretches the screen to 8.3in and adds a wireless phone charging dock, a 4G wi-fi hotspot, a DVD player and a 10GB hard drive.

The only one of our trio with a touchscreen, rather than a separate rotary controller. The interface is easy to get the hang of, thanks to a user-friendly homescreen and logical menus. However, it’s a shame there’s often a lengthy delay between you pressing the screen and anything happening. The optional Pro system (pictured) is quicker and swaps the standard 8.0in screen for a 10.0in version. Pity it costs £1900.

AMG Line trim comes with sat-nav as standard, albeit a simpler Garmin-powered version than the one fitted to our test car. The standard system is adequate, but the rotary interface isn’t as intuitive as the one in the Audi. The optional Comand system (pictured) is better than the standard Merc system and brings a powerful Burmester stereo, but it’s very pricey at £2995 (only available as part of the Premium Plus package).
