Our verdict

With these cars having the same basic underpinnings and engine, it would have been easy to assume that this test was something of a forgone conclusion. Surely the one with the nicer interior and premium badge would win?

Actually, no. While the SQ2 is slightly plusher inside and fractionally quieter when cruising, the Ateca is the superior sports SUV. Not only does it have sweeter steering and greater composure on bumpy B-roads, but it also has more space to take your family along for the ride. Put simply, it’s going to take something special to steal the Ateca’s well-earned crown.
