Ford Fiesta Euro NCAP crash test

The new Ford Fiesta has been given the maximum five-star rating for safety by Euro NCAP, marking it out as one of the safest small cars on sale.

The Fiesta is only the second small car this year to have been awarded top marks in crash tests with its standard safety equipment, with the other being the Seat Ibiza.

Despite its five-star mark, Euro NCAP has pointed out that the Fiesta only has automatic emergency braking (AEB) – a crucial safety technology that can apply the car's brakes automatically just before a collision – as an option. Since just 5% of people opt for additional safety equipment when buying a new car, the Ibiza remains Euro NCAP's top-scoring small car.

The Fiesta was one of the first cars to be tested by Euro NCAP when the organisation was launched 20 years ago and crash test footage of that car has been released to emphasise how much safer modern cars are.

Other cars to have acheived a five-star rating this month include the Mazda CX-5, Renault Koleos, Jeep Compass, Vauxhall Grandland X and Mercedes-Benz C-Class Cabriolet.

Kia's Rio hatchback and Picanto city car both returned disappointing three-star results with their standard equipment. In particular, Euro NCAP said that in its side barrier crash test, the chest of a dummy representing a small child was poorly protected against impact in the Picanto. With an optional safety pack that includes AEB, the Picanto's rating rises to four stars.

The Rio, meanwhile, acheives five stars with its optional safety pack, which again includes AEB alongside lane keeping assistance.
