The very idea of an 'entry-level' Ferrari may be contradictory, but the new Ferrari Portofino is indeed the company's most affordable model. It's a replacement for the California T and, like that car, is a convertible grand tourer – designed to carry two people and their luggage in comfort across huge distances.

Ferrari Portofino features and interior

The Portofino, named after an Italian village, is based on an all-new chassis that's claimed to make it much lighter than the California T. It also comes with electronic power steering – a system first used on the hardcore 812 Superfast model – that is designed to make the car more usable and offer a lighter feel.

Inside, the Portofino looks similar to the California T, but sports a new 10.2in infotainment screen. Like other Ferrari models, the Portofino includes a part-digital instrument cluster, which can display the sat-nav map and other information directly in front of the driver. There's also an electrically deployable wind deflector that is said to reduce wind flow into the interior by 30%, helping to make the car quieter at speed. The Portofino's hard-top roof can be raised and lowered on the move.

There are two rear seats in the Portofino, but Ferrari admits these are only suitable for short trips and, even then, are only likely to seat children comfortably.

Ferrari Portofino engines

Powering the Portofino is a V8 petrol engine that produces 592bhp – 40bhp more than the California T. The Portofino can reach 62mph from a standing start in 3.5sec and has a top speed of 'more than 199mph', which we're betting means 200mph.

Considering that performance, it's unsurprising to find that claimed fuel consumption stands at just 27mpg and CO2 emissions at 245g/km. However, it's likely that most Ferrari owners won't be concerned with high running costs.

Ferrari Portofino price

Ferrari hasn't confirmed prices for the Portofino, but it's likely to command a small premium over the outgoing California T, which has a price tag of £156,060. At around the £160,000 price point, the new Portofino will compete in the same territory as the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 and Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet, which will cost you £116,625 and £137,533 respectively.
