Volkswagen has announced prices for its new Golf small family car, with base models starting at 13,150.

That buys you a 79bhp 1.4 S three-door model, which is almost 900 more than the current entry model.

From launch there are three trim levels available S, SE and GT and a choice of four petrol engines and two diesels.

S trim comes with seven airbags, including a new driver's knee airbag, ESP, air-conditioning and electrically heated and adjustable door mirrors.

SE models get a swankier stereo with iPod connectivity, alloy wheels and cruise control.

GT-specced cars get sports suspension, sports seats, bigger alloy wheel and steering-wheel mounted controls.

The petrol engine line-up comprises of a 79bhp 1.4-litre, 100bhp 1.6 and two 1.4 TSI engines with either 120 or 158bhp.

There are two 2-litre diesels, with 108 or 138bhp.

You can order you new Golf now, with first deliveries expected in the new year.
