New Mercedes E-Class Cabriolet revealed

This is the 2013 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet, which will make its official debut at the 2013 Detroit motor show. The face-lifted model gets new styling, a more efficient range of engines and extra safety kit.

In line with changes to the E-Class saloon and Coupe, the 2013 E-Class Cabriolet has a new-look front end, with single headlight lenses repacing the old car's 'quad' headlamps.

There's also a sportier front grille, and new bumpers that incorporate extra chrome trim. As with the updated coupe model, the 2013 E-Class Cabriolet retains curved creases above its rear wheels; on 2013 E-Class saloon and estate models these have been replaced by straight lines.

There are more subtle changes inside the overall architecture remains the same, but there are new air vent surrounds and changes to the instrument cluster and centre console.

A new engine range gives improved CO2 emissions and fuel economy. The previous V6 and V8 petrol engines have been dropped, while updated four-cylinder E200 and E250 petrol engines get new direct-injection systems for improved efficiency.

As before, there are four-cylinder E220 and E250 CDI diesel engines, or the six-cylinder E350 CDI. Six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic gearboxes are available, depending on engine.

A range of new safety features are offered, including a system that uses radar, cameras and ultrasonic technology to read the road ahead.

Collision Prevention Assist system comes as standard and applies the brakes in the event of an impending crash. There's also an updated Attention Assist system, which warns the driver when they are showing signs of fatigue.

Optional safety kit includes Distronic Plus with Steering Assist, which can keep the car in its lane in traffic, while Pre-Safe Brake can detect pedestrians and brake to avoid a collision at up to 30mph.

Mercedes says UK prices and specifications will be announced later this month, when customers will be able to place an order. Small increases over the current car are likely, meaning a starting price of around 36,000. First deliveries will be in May 2013.
