The new Mitsubishi Outlander will be revealed at the Geneva motor show 2012.
Mitsubishi has released a teaser image of a strategic and innovative premium vehicle that it will reveal at the show, but hasnt said what it is. The image clearly shows a chunky, 4x4-style front end that is all but identical to that of the Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV concept car, which made its debut at the 2011 Tokyo motor show.
Mitsubishi has already confirmed that the Concept PX-MiEV II is the basis for the next Outlander, and only minimal changes are expected for the production model, which is due on sale in January 2013.
The Concept PX-MiEV II has a plug-in hybrid powertrain that combines a 2.0-litre petrol engine with two electric motors. We've tested the system in a development vehicle based on the current Outlander.
Mitsubishi predicts that electric cars and plug-in hybrids could account for as much as 50% of its sales by 2020, but a petrol-hybrid version, plus conventional petrol and diesel engines, will be offered in the next Outlander.
The platform that underpins the Outlander is expected to be used for the next Mitsubishi Lancer, and related Evo performance model. Citroen and Peugeot sell their own versions of the current Outlander, as the Citroen C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007, but a similar deal isnt likely for the new model.
The Mitsubishi Mirage is also expected to be at the Geneva motor show. The production version was revealed at the 2011 Tokyo motor show and the budget-priced supermini is due on sale in the UK later this year.
