Our verdict

Those in the market for a petrol family hatchback have two fine options here and the result of this test is agonisingly close. The Astra's superior performance, greater rear space and more generous kit list will be huge draws, as will its standard AEB and better smartphone connectivity.

But the Leon is the more rounded car. Its engine is smaller, but never feels short of breath, while its interior space is more than adequate. Add in a better ride and handling and cheaper running costs, and it just wins.
