New Skoda Kamiq vs Kia Stonic vs Volkswagen T-Roc: costs

The new Skoda Kamiq small SUV promises to slot easily into buyers’ lives – but can it do so better than its Kia and Volkswagen rivals?

Costs, equipment, reliability, safety and security

For anyone buying on a PCP finance deal, the Stonic is the cheapest, costing £31 per month less than the Kamiq and £77 less than the T-Roc over three years – assuming a £2000 customer deposit and an annual limit of 10,000 miles. The T-Roc is the only one without a manufacturer deposit contribution, though. If you’re leasing, the Stonic still costs the least, but by a smaller amount.

Meagre discounts available on the Kamiq at the time of writing mean it’s the priciest cash buy, with the Stonic being the cheapest. However, running costs favour the Stonic less. It’s the priciest to service and is predicted to depreciate the fastest, with the T-Roc holding on to the biggest chunk of its value after three years.

Used Skoda Kamiq 2019-present side driving

The Stonic is the least fuel efficient, managing 40.0mpg in our tests, compared with the T-Roc’s 43.2mpg and the Kamiq’s 45.8mpg. The Stonic’s CO2 emissions are also the highest, but its lower list price means it isn’t the priciest company car. That’s the T-Roc, although we’re talking about only £500 more in benefit-in-kind payments over three years than the cheapest, the Kamiq.

The Stonic comes with Kia’s mega seven-year/100,000-mile manufacturer’s warranty, whereas its rivals offer cover for just three years or 60,000 miles. Kia also has the best reliability record, coming sixth out of 31 brands in our 2019 survey, with Skoda just below in ninth place and Volkswagen farther down the list in 16th.

VW T-Roc

Which is likely to be the safest? Euro NCAP awarded them all five stars (out of five), but the Kamiq and T-Roc had better adult occupancy and pedestrian protection scores than the Stonic. All three come with automatic emergency braking and lanekeeping assistance, but the T-Roc is the only one without blindspot monitoring fitted as standard.

As for luxuries, the Stonic gets the most: heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and keyless entry. The T-Roc counters with adaptive cruise control and interior ambient lighting.
