New Subaru Impreza revealed ahead of New York motor show
Subaru's new Impreza will take on the Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra in the UK...
The next-generation Subaru Impreza has been revealed ahead of its debut at the New York motor show.
Although the model on display in New York will be the four-door saloon version of the car, which won’t be coming to the UK, a five-door hatchback version will arrive in this country late next year.
What is it?
Subaru’s Impreza is a direct rival for the likes of the Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra and Volkswagen Golf, although previous versions of the car haven’t been as well regarded as those rivals.
The new Impreza features all-new Subaru underpinnings and is longer, wider and slightly lower than the outgoing car, and features a longer wheelbase - something which should translate to more interior space.
Subaru says the Impreza’s suspension systems have been revised for a more involving, sporty driving experience.
What engines can I choose from?
Because the new Impreza is still over a year away from launching in the UK, Subaru has yet to reveal details of the car’s engine range. We know that a range of Boxer petrol engines will feature, and use cylinder deactivation technology to save on fuel.
A range-topping WRX STi performance version is also planned, which could get a hybrid powertrain with as much as 320bhp.
As with the current car, buyers should be able to choose from both manual and automatic gearbox options. All models get four-wheel drive as standard.
What equipment does it come with?
While details of the exact trim and specification levels which will be offered in the UK have yet to be confirmed, we do know the new Impreza gets Subaru’s ‘Eyesight’ crash avoidance system for the first time. The system uses cameras to monitor the road ahead and warn of potential hazards.
The Eyesight system incorporates many existing safety technologies including adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning and blind spot monitoring.
The latest version of Subaru’s infotainment system also features, and includes a large touchscreen interface and a range of driving apps.
How much does it cost?
How much the new Subaru Impreza will cost in the UK largely depends on foreign exchange rates between the UK and Subaru’s home market of Japan. However, the current Impreza is priced from £17,495 in this country, and we don’t expect prices to rise too far from that.
How good are its rivals?
The new Subaru Impreza will be up against some of the best-selling cars in the UK, and the Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra are very well regarded by What Car? Other, more niche rivals include the Mazda 3 and Kia Cee’d.
