Our verdict

Add up the star ratings and it’s clear that the Q5 is the easy winner – a true five-star car. Even tested here on perhaps the worst suspension option for demonstrating its key asset (a comfortable ride), it’s hardly a bone-shaker.

We were also surprised at just how well it compares with the Macan to drive on a fast, twisty road. It’s easily the most practical, too.

These days, there’s no doubt that Volvo is a major player in the premium market, and the XC60 is an immensely stylish car. So, it grabs your attention and impresses with its rear seat space, driving position and safety kit. However, it can’t match the Q5 in several key areas, including costs, handling, boot space and infotainment.

Finally, the Macan. While PCP finance payments are reasonable compared with the XC60, it’s still pricey to run and the least practical. However, as a fast SUV that dynamically surpasses all of its rivals, it’s a mightily impressive thing.
