New XPeng L03 coupé SUV to take on Tesla Model Y next year
On sale 2027 Price from £35,000 (est)
Third time’s the charm, as they say, so maybe the XPeng L03 – the aptly-named third model to be offered in the UK by the Chinese brand – will be the car that seals XPeng’s success here in Europe.
Official technical details haven’t yet been revealed for the L03, but it will be offered with both all-electric and range-extender (REEV) power. In its home market of China, electric versions of the L03 will use either a 56kWh or 69kWh battery pack, with official ranges of up to 388 miles – but it’s worth noting that this is based on China’s CLTC test cycle, which tends to be more lenient than the WLTP testing used here in Europe.
It’s unclear if these options will be offered in the UK though, as for the first time, XPeng is launching the L03 in Europe at the same time as in China. Where Chinese L03s seem to be solely rear-wheel-drive, we may see European-spec models feature a four-wheel-drive set-up to keep them in line with XPeng’s other offerings, the G6 and X9.
If it wants to keep up with the likes of the Tesla Model Y, the electric L03 will need to manage at least 350 miles on a single charge.
Described by XPeng as a “next-gen AI SUV coupé”, the L03 has been imagined by former Ferrari design chief JuanMa Lopez, and is said to major on efficiency thanks to its aerodynamic shape.
Inside, it seems the L03 is aiming for premium territory, with its huge 15.6in central infotainment touchscreen, plus ambient lighting and “lounge-style” seating. The “AI” aspect refers to it being fitted with XPeng’s autonomous driving technology, plus an AI-powered voice assistant that is capable of facilitating over-the-air updates.
The XPeng L03 will arrive in the UK in 2027, joining the G6 SUV and X9 seven-seater in the firm’s lineup. Prices haven’t yet been revealed, but we expect them to start at around £35,000 – less than what you’d pay for an entry-level Model Y.
