Nissan plans to have high performance Nismo versions of many more models, including the Qashqai crossover.
Speaking to What Car? the European boss of Nismo revealed plans to grow the Nismo range: ‘we have plenty of space for Nismo to grow and we want to target a broader market’ he said.
Currently the 370Z sports car and Juke SUV have received the Nismo treatment, with more powerful engines and chassis modifications designed to serve up a sportier drive.
However, high level sources have revealed that there are also plans to produce a Nismo version of the next generation Qashqai, which could arrive by the end of 2014. There are also plans for a Nismo GT-R to rival the just-launched Porsche 911 Turbo.
A Nismo version of the Nissan Micra supermini is going on sale in Japan at the end of this year, along with a hotter electric Leaf. However, there are no plans for these to go on sale in Europe. Insiders have hinted, though, that the next generation Micra due in 2016 will also get the Nismo treatment and this is more likely to be sold in the UK as a rival to the Fiesta ST and Peugeot 208 GTI.
