What are they like inside?
All three offer a high-set driving position that SUV fans will love. Each can accommodate a couple of burly six-foot adults in the front, too, although some may wish the Vauxhall Mokka X's driver’s seat slid back a bit farther. The Seat Ateca has the most front head and leg room.
To tailor your driving position, each car has a height and reach-adjustable steering wheel, plus a height-adjustable driver’s seat. Both the Nissan Qashqai and Ateca come with adjustable lumbar support to stop you slouching on longer journeys, something that isn’t available on this version of the Mokka. Meanwhile, it’s easiest to adjust the seat backrest angle in the Ateca because you simply twist a wheel; the adjustment mechanisms on the other two require you to pull a lever and shift your weight around.
The view out the front of the Mokka X is restricted by the broad lower sections of the windscreen pillars, while both it and the Qashqai’s wide rear pillars hamper over-the-shoulder vision when reversing. This is less of an issue in the Ateca, thanks to larger rear side windows.
The Ateca’s large, clear switches nose it ahead for the most user-friendly dashboard, too. Mind you, while the Qashqai and Mokka’s dashboards have slightly smaller buttons, they’re still easy to use.
All three dashboards have a mix of soft-faced upper surfaces and scratchier plastics lower down, but while the Mokka X gets some attractive chrome detailing, its doors sound tinny when you close them. The other two feel altogether sturdier and, although you might consider the design of the Ateca’s interior a bit bland, it ultimately feels the most upmarket inside.
The Mokka X has the narrowest rear seat area, which makes it the most cramped choice for carrying five; even two tall adults sitting in the back will feel a bit cramped. The Qashqai has more leg room but the central rear passenger has to sit on a raised, hard seat. The Ateca is the most accommodating for rear passengers, with the most head and leg room, the most comfortable middle seat and the airiest feel, thanks to lots of glass.
All three have good-sized boots capable of swallowing a couple of buggies or large cases. The Mokka’s is the smallest and shallowest, but has generous underfloor storage. The Ateca’s is clearly the biggest and the height of the load bay is seriously handy, but it doesn’t get the Qashqai’s height-adjustable boot floor as standard.
