Peugeot BB1 gets green light

Peugeot's funky BB1 will be put into production.

The motorbike-that-thinks-it's-a-car or is it a car-that-thinks-it's-a-motorbike was shown as a concept car at the Frankfurt motor show last October.

The company has confirmed to What Car? that a production version will be made, and while it won't look exactly like the concept car, Peugeot says it will retain its 2+2 layout and its reverse-opening doors.

It is expected to go into production in 2011 or 2012.

With four wheels, doors and a roof, it certainly looks like a car, however it will be classed as a quadrocycle. Instead of a steering wheel and pedals, it has handlebars like a motorcycle. Rear passengers also ride pillion-style by straddling the back seat.

Power comes from two electric motors (one in each of the rear wheels). Together they produce 20bhp, which might not sound like much, but the BB1 weighs less than 600kg.

It will accelerate from 0-19mph in 2.8 seconds and 19-37mph in four seconds, and has a range of up to 75 miles which is perfectly adequate for the city centre.
