Portsmouth becomes 20mph city

Portsmouth has become the UK's first city to introduce a blanket 20mph speed limit.

In total, 1200 residential streets are included in the scheme, which is being closely monitored by other local authorities - Norwich City Council is said to be close to introducing a similar initiative.

Councillor Alex Bentley, the council's executive member for traffic and transportation, said: 'Most of our residential streets are just not suitable for speeds of more than 20mph, and we're sending a message to the reckless minority of drivers that they must drive safely'.

'Also, the safer our streets are, the more people will be encouraged to walk and cycle.'
