Our verdict

We’d like to say this was a close contest, but the reality is quite the opposite. Yep, the Karoq may not be the most exciting choice in the family SUV arena, but it’s certainly a compelling one, outscoring its rivals here in the majority of areas.

There are things that the Grandland X does better, though. You get more standard passive safety aids, for one, and while the powered tailgate is a somewhat less crucial addition, it’s nonetheless a handy one. It’s just a shame that Vauxhall can’t do better when it comes to finance packages and that the Grandland X is merely average to drive.

The Kadjar is harder to recommend – not because it’s a bad car but because the competition in this class is now so fierce. Fripperies such as a panoramic roof and a swanky sound system can’t make up for a relative shortage of substance, particularly when it comes to interior quality and standard safety kit.
