Running costs

All models fall into high emissions bands, with the 2.0-litre petrol in band F, and the 2.5 and 3.0-litre models in band G. That means either 210 or a whopping 400 a year in road tax. Both diesels are band F.

BMW dealers' servicing costs are generally high, but shop around as you can usually save at a different garage. Insurance premiums are also high, but you shouldn't have to pay for many repairs, because the X3 is reliable and robust.
