Should I buy one?

If you’re in the market for a small SUV, you’d be mad not to at least put the Ateca on your shortlist. And unless you’re a company car driver, the 1.4 TSI petrol engine is the one to go for; it’s punchy, smooth, relatively efficient and significantly cheaper than any of the diesels.

Unless you’re really desperate for an automatic, though, we stick with the standard six-speed manual gearbox. The optional auto doesn’t just push up the price, it’s also a bit jerky when parking and when creeping along in slow-moving traffic. But having said all that, if you do want a small SUV with an automatic gearbox and a petrol engine, you won't find a better one than this.
