Ford Fiesta
What is it? Updated version of Fords brilliant Fiesta
Price from 9800 (est)
On sale Autumn

Fords face-lifted Fiesta will be both greener and sportier. At one end of the range, a new 1.0-litre, three-cylinder Ecoboost petrol engine should give CO2 emissions of 110g/km or less.

Joining the range at the other end will be the production version of the ST concept car from the 2011 Frankfurt motor show. Itll have a 178bhp 1.6-litre turbocharged engine, an upgraded chassis and a bold makeover. The ST concepts new-look front end will be introduced to all Fiesta models. Trim upgrades will give a higher-quality feel.

Hyundai i20
**What is it? More kit and improved efficiency
Price from 10k (est)
On sale** Summer

Kias new Rio already delivers sub-90g/km CO2 emissions and a performance to take on the class-leading Fiesta and Polo. Now its time for its sister car, the Hyundai i20, to get the same tech.

The new efficiency options likely to include the same three-cylinder diesel engine and stop-start will be bundled into a mild mid-life face-lift for the i20. It gets new head- and tail-lights, although the chassis and side profile will remain much the same.

We wouldnt expect any price cuts, either, although the standard equipment levels are likely to be given a mild boost right across the range.

What is it? Chinese-built, UK-designed supermini
Price from 9500 (est)
On sale Winter

MG will add a third model to its UK range when it introduces the MG3 supermini in late 2012.
The styling of this Ford Fiesta/Skoda Fabia rival closely follows that of the MG Zero concept car. It was designed in the UK and is already on sale in China, where it is built.

UK versions will have changes to boost refinement and interior quality, but theyre likely to use versions of the same 1.3 and 1.5-litre petrol engines.

Prices are yet to be confirmed, but wed expect them to undercut mainstream rivals, so an entry point below 10,000 is likely.
