As battery, charging and electric motor technology continues to advance at a dizzying rate, choosing an electric car as your next company car is becoming the preferred option for many business drivers.

The amount of choice you have in the market is growing all the time, too, ranging from traditional family cars and executive saloons, to SUVs and luxury cars. There really is an electric car to suit most drivers these days, and running one as a company car brings big advantages – not least that electric cars currently attract a benefit-in-kind (BIK) tax rate of just 2%.

With that in mind, then, these are the best company cars to choose if you plan on going electric.

The Audi Q4 e-tron is a chic choice among electric SUVs, so we’ll whisper the fact that it’s very closely related to the substantially cheaper Skoda Enyaq iV underneath. Still, this is no bad thing, as demonstrated by the fact that our preferred 40 model managed a range of 266 miles in our real-world test. It feels pretty sprightly off the line, too, and cruises quietly at speed. The suspension does a good job of blending comfort and agility, and the tight turning circle makes the Q4 e-tron simple to park.

Quality inside is, as you might expect, superb, and the Q4 e-tron comes with niceties such as tri-zone climate control, heated front seats and 19in alloy wheels.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 may not look it in the pictures, but in reality it’s massive. Walking up to it is like witnessing a special effect made real, because it just keeps getting larger and larger.&nbsp;

The good news is that the dimensions translate into the sort of interior space you generally find in wedding cars. Its back seats slide back and forth as required, and the backrests recline. There’s loads of space for the two people up front, too.

9. Hyundai Ioniq 5

We prefer the model with the 70kWh battery, which offers a range of up to 298 miles and a 0-60mph time of 7.0sec, but while the Ioniq 5 is comfortable, it definitely prefers a more relaxed approach to twisty roads.

When it comes to battery choices, Kia has adopted a ‘take it or leave it’ approach, because there’s only one. The 64.8kWh battery powers a 201bhp electric motor that gives the Niro EV a decent turn of pace away from rest. The system is smooth, and offers the ability to vary the regenerative braking, so you barely need to use the brakes in town.

Seating space is generous inside, so the Niro EV will make a fine family vehicle as well as a good company car. The boot is large, too, and the cable storage area under the bonnet means the boot remains uncluttered.

Standard equipment on every model includes wireless phone charging, dual-zone climate control, adaptive cruise control and heated seats.

When it was launched, the Volkswagen ID 3 showed that its maker was very serious indeed about its electric future. It looked like nothing else, and that funky style was backed up by generous quantities of space in both the front and back seats, while the boot is similarly practical.&nbsp;

The model with the 58kWh battery offers the best blend of performance, range and cost. It will cover the 0-60mph dash in just 6.6sec and has an official range of 259 miles.

7. Volkswagen ID 3

The ride is firm, but the handling is neat, and the ID 3 is incredibly nimble around town, with a tiny turning circle that’s a match for even that of the Up city car. Life trim is our favourite, because it comes with heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, parking sensors fore and aft, and adaptive cruise control.

If you think of the Cupra Born as a Volkswagen ID 3 in trainers and really tight shorts, you won’t be far wrong. The two cars are pretty much identical, but the Born has slightly lowered suspension to firm up the ride slightly and give it fractionally sharper handling.

The 201bhp motor means the Born gets out of the blocks quickly, and the 58kWh battery gives it an official range of 258 miles, which should be around 220 miles in reality.&nbsp; 
&nbsp;

6. Cupra Born

V2 trim is the sweet spot, because it comes with heated front seats, privacy glass and a head-up display.

BMW saloons are synonymous with the company car market, and the BMW i4 is carrying the flame for the electric era.

The entry-level eDrive40 version is ideal for most drivers, because it gives the i4 sparkling performance and an official range of up to 367 miles between charges. That should equate to around 300 miles in the real world, which should be plenty for even higher-mileage drivers.

5. BMW i4

It’s quiet, too, with minimal road and wind noise, and there’s hardly any whine from the electric motor. Better still, the 200kW charging capability allows you to recharge from 10-80% in just 30 minutes or so, if you can find a suitably powerful charging point.

The BMW iX3 is a high-tech SUV with an unintimidating face. So, while the iX3 looks just like a fossil-fuelled X3, it has cutting-edge electric power beneath. It has a decent official range of up to 285 miles, which should equate to around 220 miles in normal conditions. You’ll enjoy covering those miles, too, because the iX3 is good to drive; it handles neatly and is pleasingly brisk.

4. BMW iX3

It doesn’t want for standard kit, either, with a powered tailgate, a panoramic sunroof, parking sensors and leather upholstery all included with our preferred M Sport trim.

If there’s a car that makes electric power look completely normal, the Skoda Enyaq is that car. It’s typical Skoda, in that it’s a slightly sober-looking SUV, with little to give away what lies beneath. There is a vast amount of space inside, no matter whether you’re in the front or the back, and the boot is massive.

3. Skoda Enyaq iV

It’s brisk rather than rapid, but it’s comfortable enough both in town and on faster roads, although fun is decidedly off the menu; the hefty kerb weight sees to that. Still, the official range is 256 miles, which should be more than enough for most drivers, on most days.

On top of that, an annual BIK bill of just £148 – if you're a 20% tax payer – is a real bargain when you consider all of the car it gets you.

Everything that earned the Kia EV6 its title as our Car of the Year for&nbsp;2022 applies when you consider it as a company vehicle, too. It’s big and it’s sumptuous, which means you can take yourself and others a long way in perfect comfort. A long way? Oh yes, because the EV6 has an official range of 328 miles on a charge, and it can recharge at an exceptionally rapid 239kW rate.

2. Kia EV6

Standard kit includes dual-zone air conditioning, electrically adjustable and heated front seats, automatic lights and wipers and cruise control. Downsides are few and far between: the boot is a bit on the shallow side, and the ride can feel firm at times. Still, it’s nothing you can’t live with.

There’s a good reason why the Tesla Model 3 sells by the boatload: it’s a brilliant car full stop. For a start, it's seriously quick, and on top of that it’s competitively practical and comfortable over a distance.

It handles well, and while the ride is firm, it’s not overly so. It’s a shame that the huge show-stealing touchscreen is nowhere near as usable as a more conventional interior set-up, though.

Still, factor in the 374-mile official range – or 284 miles in real-world use – and Tesla’s superb charging network and it’s easy to see why the Model 3 is in an unassailable position as the best company car that we can recommend.
