3 - Ford Focus
Traditionally, the Ford Focus has been one of the best value cars to buy on the used market, and this model is no different. Nothing else on the hatchback market can match the Focus for pure handling. You can rest assured that whichever version you choose, you'll be getting a well equipped car - the standard equipment list includes DAB radio and Bluetooth connectivity, for example. Just watch out for scuffed interior trim when buying.

2 - Vauxhall Corsa
We were big fans of the previous Vauxhall Corsa. In fact, we liked it so much that we named it as our Car of the Year in 2007. This is a great used car, and it's also highly affordable. There's a spacious cabin inside, and the ride is comfortable. Go for a more powerful version if you can, as some of the smaller petrol engines can feel underpowered.

1 - Ford Fiesta
It's no surprise to see the Ford Fiesta at the very top of our list. It's still the best-selling new car in the UK in its current form, and the previous generation topped that list as well. For many, the Fiesta is the de facto small car, and it's easy to see why. It's great fun to drive, is reasonably practical, and long-term technical problems are few and far between. If you're shopping for a used car, the Fiesta definitely deserves a place on your list.
