The safest 5-star cars 2018

The Ateca is Seat's first ever SUV, but while the Spanish brand is undoubtedly very late to the party, it's making up for that with keen pricing, a spacious interior and class-leading handling. The Ateca even managed to get the better of the Qashqai when we group tested the cars.

Euro NCAP scores:

  • Adult occupant protection 93%
  • Child occupant protection 84%
  • Pedestrian protection 71%

Audi Q7 3.0 TDI Quattro SE

The safest 5-star cars 2018

Audi's biggest SUV is one of the best around. It's relaxing to drive and comfortable to sit in, while the 3.0-litre diesel version is also pretty efficient to run. Like its rivals, the Q7 is more at home on the road than off it, but it comes with four-wheel drive to give a surefooted feel. Despite being a luxury car, the Q7 is also extremely practical, and offers plenty of space for families and their luggage.

Euro NCAP scores:

  • Adult occupant protection 94%
  • Child occupant protection 88%
  • Pedestrian protection 70%

Skoda Fabia

The safest 5-star cars 2018

The Fabia is a former What Car? Car of the Year, which gives you some idea of how good it is, and Skoda has continued to improve it, recently fitting a brilliant new 1.0 TSI petrol engine. Front and rear space are generous – four adults will have no trouble getting comfortable – plus it's enjoyable to drive and SE versions and above come with automatic city braking technology.

Euro NCAP scores:

  • Adult occupant protection 81%
  • Child occupant protection 81%
  • Pedestrian protection 69%
