Audi A4

In most executive cars, we recommend the 2.0-litre diesel model, but while this version of the Audi A4 is a five-star car, the 3.0-litre diesel makes even more sense because it's stronger and quieter without sacrificing MPG or CO2 emissions. The A4 also offers a classy and beautifully laid out interior with practical rear seats and a spacious boot. If you want a prestige saloon, this is the one to choose.

Euro NCAP scores:

  • Adult occupant protection 90%
  • Child occupant protection 87%
  • Pedestrian protection 75%

Skoda Superb

The latest Skoda Superb is every bit a match for some of the more premium-badged cars on this list. It's stylish and drives well, and despite being a compact executive car offers a massive amount of space inside. Company car drivers may choose the strong 2.0-litre diesel-engined model, but private buyers should steer towards the 1.4-litre petrol version - it pulls strongly from low revs yet is still very quiet.

Euro NCAP scores:

  • Adult occupant protection 86%
  • Child occupant protection 86%
  • Pedestrian protection 71%

Land Rover Discovery

Much like its predecessor, the all-new Discovery is a whopping great seven-seater. And yet at the same time it's a big step forward: it’s more practical than any of its rivals, suitably posh inside, great to drive and even pretty good value, undercutting the Audi Q7 by several thousands of pounds if you stick with the entry-level 2.0-litre diesel.

Euro NCAP scores:

  • Adult occupant protection 90%
  • Child occupant protection 80%
  • Pedestrian protection 75%

Volkswagen Polo

The Polo costs more than many mainstream rivals, but it holds its value well which helps to keep monthly PCP finance deals on a par with them. It may not be the most fun small hatch to drive, but it's quiet, with a comfortable ride and a roomy interior. Safety is well catered for with automatic emergency braking and an advanced pedestrian detection system as standard.

Euro NCAP scores:

  • Adult occupant protection 96%
  • Child occupant protection 85%
  • Pedestrian protection 76%

Mazda CX-5

The CX-5 is a highly practical family-sized SUV with a smart, practical interior, good driving manners and lots of standard equipment. It comes with automatic emergency braking as standard; we'd also add the optional lane keep and blind spot assistance systems.

Euro NCAP scores:

  • Adult occupant protection 95%
  • Child occupant protection 80%
  • Pedestrian protection 78%
