The safest new SUVs in the UK

Safest SUVs

With their tough looks, 4x4s and SUVs have long been seen as some of the safest cars on the road. But in reality there are sizeable differences between the best and worst performers.

This is highlighted by the crash tests conducted by the independent safety assessors at Euro NCAP. So, if you're looking for a new SUV to keep you and your family safe, what should you choose?

Below we count down the 10 SUVs that have received the highest scores since the latest – and toughest – version of the Euro NCAP test was introduced at the start of 2016. Scores are out of 400.

10. Volkswagen Tiguan

Volkswagen Tiguan front

Adult occupant protection: 96% Child occupant protection: 84% Pedestrian protection: 72% Safety assist: 68% Total Euro NCAP score: 320

The second-generation Tiguan makes a great family car because it has a spacious and versatile interior. True, it's quite an expensive choice, but it feels classy and is good to drive.

=8. Kia Niro (with safety pack)

Kia Niro front

Adult occupant protection: 91% Child occupant protection: 80% Pedestrian protection: 70% Safety assist: 81% Total Euro NCAP score: 322

Kia's Niro offers class-leading CO2 emissions and excellent real-world fuel economy thanks to its hybrid drivetrain. However, it's not much fun to drive and there are too many hard plastics inside.

The Niro gets only a four-star Euro NCAP rating in standard form. However, add the optional safety pack and it becomes a very safe choice.

=8. Range Rover Velar

Range Rover Velar front

Adult occupant protection: 93% Child occupant protection: 85% Pedestrian protection: 70% Safety assist: 81% Total Euro NCAP score: 322

This latest addition to the Range Rover line-up is a refined and comfortable SUV that makes the Evoque look dated, thanks to sleek, uncluttered lines; even the exterior door handles sit flush with the body, only sliding out when you approach the car carrying the key.

=8. Range Rover Velar

There are more practical alternatives, but none can match the Velar for visual drama, and few better it for safety.

=6. Toyota C-HR

Toyota C-HR front

Adult occupant protection: 95% Child occupant protection: 77% Pedestrian protection: 76% Safety assist: 78% Total Euro NCAP score: 326

The hybrid version of this funky small SUV makes a lot of sense as a company car, but we prefer the regular 1.2-litre petrol model because it's much better at soaking up bumps and feels remarkably agile for a car of its type.

=6. Toyota C-HR

In terms of safety, the C-HR has a very impressive 95% adult occupant protection rating and also betters most cars for pedestrian protection.

=6. Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross

Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross front

Adult occupant protection: 97% Child occupant protection: 78% Pedestrian protection: 80% Safety assist: 71% Total Euro NCAP score: 326

Mitsubishi’s answer to the Nissan Qashqai doesn’t handle as well as the best family SUVs and gives you a fiddly infotainment system, but it’s a spacious and well equipped choice, and its petrol engine is refined.

=6. Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross

What’s most impressive about the Eclipse Cross, though, is its 97% score for adult occupant protection, a figure beaten by only one SUV.

5. DS 7 Crossback

DS 7 Crossback front

Adult occupant protection: 91% Child occupant protection: 87% Pedestrian protection: 73% Safety assist: 76% Total Euro NCAP score: 327

With the DS 7 Crossback, Citroën’s luxury brand is gunning for the Audi Q5, and it has succeeded in bettering the Audi’s Euro NCAP score.

The DS 7 also offers a comfortable ride and comes well equipped, but interior quality is disappointing in places and resale values are likely to be weak.

4. Jaguar F-Pace

 Jaguar F-Pace front

Adult occupant protection: 93% Child occupant protection: 85% Pedestrian protection: 80% Safety assist: 72% Total Euro NCAP score: 330

Before the F-Pace, Jaguar had never built an SUV, but it’s managed to create one of the best handling cars of this sort, and one that’s surprisingly practical.

4. Jaguar F-Pace

You do have to put up with a firm ride in the F-Pace, but there have been no compromises when it comes to safety.

3. Volkswagen T-Roc

Volkswagen T-Roc front

Adult occupant protection: 96% Child occupant protection: 87% Pedestrian protection: 79% Safety assist: 71% Total Euro NCAP score: 333

Volkswagens tend to be cars that appeal to your rational side rather than your emotional one. But with its smallest SUV, the T-Roc, the German brand has tried to offer a bit more flair than usual.

3. Volkswagen T-Roc

Volkswagen T-Roc crash test

Interior quality is a bit disappointing, with the T-Roc featuring lots of hard plastics. However, the ride is comfortable, the boot big and safety impressive.

2. Subaru XV

 Subaru XV front

Adult occupant protection: 94% Child occupant protection: 89% Pedestrian protection: 84% Safety assist: 68% Total Euro NCAP score: 335

Parents will be interested to learn that the XV has the best child occupant protection score of any car in this list.

2. Subaru XV

Subaru’s family SUV also scores well for adult occupant and pedestrian protection, and is astonishingly good off road. Unfortunately, it’s expensive to buy and run, the boot is small and the engines feel weedy.

1. Volvo XC60

Volvo XC60 front

Adult occupant protection: 98% Child occupant protection: 87% Pedestrian protection: 76% Safety assist: 95% Total Euro NCAP score: 356

The XC60 won the Safety Award at the 2018 What Car? Car of the Year Awards, and with good reason; it posted the best Euro NCAP score of last year and comes with a host of clever technologies to help you avoid an accident in the first place.
