The Hyundai Santa Fe has the advantage of a five-year manufacturers’ warranty, of which buyers who can stretch to the current model can take advantage. But the earlier, second-generation car is also highly recommended as it’s great value on the used market, and one of the few SUVs for the price that combines a manageable size, which makes it easy to drive, with the option of seven seats. It’s comfortable and quiet, too, so while it isn’t the most exciting thing around, it’s a great family SUV for the buyer on a budget.

5. Honda CR-V
Beneath the Honda CR-V’s slightly weird looks lies a thoroughly spacious, practical and comfortable car. There’s room enough for five adults and a part-time four-wheel drive system which makes it pretty efficient. What’s more, it has a great reputation for reliability, especially in petrol form – diesel versions are known to go through clutches at quite a rate, though, so be prepared for that. Otherwise, the CR-V is an easy-going and hassle-free car to own.
