Most popular cars

If you're thinking of buying a new car, then there are more than 4000 variations of around 400 cars to choose from, so what should you do if you don't know what you want?

Well, a good starting point is to see which models are attracting the majority of the interest on Whatcar.com.

The top 10 is usually made up of a mix of the most keenly anticipated new cars, the What Car? Award winners and the UK's best sellers.

These are the hottest cars from the past seven days:

10th – Volkswagen Tiguan

Volkswagen's second-generation Tiguan makes a great family car. It oozes practicality and, while it is quite an expensive choice, it handles well and has a smart interior. To keep costs down, we recommend opting for a mid-range diesel model in SE Nav trim. This gets you sat-nav as well as three-zone climate control, cruise control and more comfortable seats.

Our pick: 2.0 TDI Bluemotion Technology SE Nav

9th – Audi A3

The Audi A3 is available with a range of strong and efficient engines, but the turbocharged 1.4-litre petrol engine is particularly good. Avoid the optional sports suspension, and the A3 also strikes an excellent balance between comfort and control. We'd recommend the Sportback version, which comes with five doors and more rear leg room to boost practicality. However, whichever A3 you go for, you'll be getting a stylish, premium family hatchback with a beautifully built interior.

Our pick: 1.4 TFSI 150 Sport Sportback

8th – BMW X1

There are plenty of premium small SUVs to choose from right now, but the BMW X1 stands out from the crowd thanks to its luxurious and practical interior. It's also good fun to drive, and the sDrive18d version we recommend is responsive from low revs. Stick with entry-level SE specification, because it gets you everything you'll want, including 17in alloy wheels, rear parking sensors, sat-nav and climate control.

Our pick: sDrive18d SE
