7. Skoda Kodiaq

Skoda's first large SUV is one of the most practical around, with seating for seven, so it's perhaps not surprising that it features consistently in this top 10. It's a comfortable choice with a smart interior, although you do have to be careful when speccing it because it's easy to push the price north of Β£30k once you start adding options.

What Car? rating Rated 5 out of 5

Our pick 2.0 TDI SE 7-seat

6. Audi Q2

The Q2 is Audi's smallest and cheapest SUV, but it still has the sort of classy interior you expect from the brand. What's more, it's great to drive, with composed handling, precise steering and impressive refinement. True, it's a little cramped in the back and is still more expensive than most similarly-sized models, but due to its desirability, it's predicted to hold its value well.

What Car? rating: Rated 4 out of 5

Our pick: 1.4 TFSI Sport

5. Nissan Qashqai

The Nissan Qashqai is the car that started the trend for jacked-up family hatchbacks and it remains one of the best following a recent update. True, there are cheaper alternatives, such as the Suzuki SX4 S-Cross, but the Qashqai makes up for that price premium with a spacious and well-designed interior, solid build quality and superb comfort and refinement.

What Car? rating Rated 4 out of 5

Our pick 1.5 dCi 110 N-tec
