4. Citroën Grand C4 Picasso
You could never call the Citroën Grand C4 Picasso fun to drive, but its soft ride does mean that it’s very comfortable. What’s more, with innovative design touches and a versatile interior, it’s also a great way to move the family around. The rearmost seats fold down into the floor, and the middle row fold almost flat, leaving a very useful load space. Great visibility and light controls make it easy to handle, too.

Granted, the Touran is pretty bland both inside and out, but as a tool for transporting seven people, it’s hard to beat. The second row of seats folds, slides, tumbles forward and can even be completely removed, while the third row folds into the floor and, when upright, both rear seats are large enough for adults to use on short journeys. The Touran is pleasant and easy to drive, and while the ride is a touch firm, it’s comfortable enough. A strong range of engines rounds things off.
We found: 2008 2.0 TDI Sport, 85,000 miles, £4737
It’s the smallest MPV here, but if as a flexible five-seater it’s hard to beat the Citroën C3 Picasso. True, it’s not that much fun to drive, but it is immensely practical, with a huge boot and sliding rear seat, while its comfortable ride and fantastic visibility makes it easy to drive and a pleasure to tackle long trips in. It’s great value and cheap to run, thanks to its efficient engines and decent reliability record. So if you only need five seats, it should be on your list to try.
