The BMW X5 xDrive45e is a superb car, and if our pockets were deep and full this is the car most of our judges would choose to tow with.

We've had mixed experiences with petrol-electric hybrids in the past, but the X5 does everything we expect of a great tow car and more.

BMW X5 towing a caravan - rear

One advantage of all the extra electrical components required is that the X5 is heavy. Very heavy. A kerbweight of 2510kg means it's carrying half a tonne of extra bone and muscle compared with some big 4x4s, and that's reflected in the way it tows. Even pulling the heaviest of our Adria caravans loaded to its maximum weight, the big X5 was unshakeable.

Immense grip, minimal roll, and accurate steering helped it master the lane-change test. We stopped after the third and fastest attempt at the test, but with the distinct impression the X5 could have gone much quicker.

Such a violent change of direction is very rare in everyday towing, but the need to stay straight and true at 60mph is commonplace. The X5 felt like it was barely in its stride at this speed, and was still composed and comfortable at 70mph.

The hill start is one manoeuvre some plug-in hybrids have struggled with, but not this X5. In fact, we found it could climb up the 1-in-6 slope on electric power alone.

It's a shame you miss out on the third row of seats which is available in other versions of the X5, but the plug-in hybrid seats five in considerable comfort and luxury.
