There's a lot to like about the Seat Leon. It may be one of the lightest and most affordable cars tested this year, but it punches well above its weight when it comes to towing.
Stability is what really counts in a good tow car, and it can be in short supply when a car is light. However, the Leon gave our drivers no worries on that score, pulling its Adria caravan straight and true at 60mph and beyond.
Even with electrical assistance from a 48V starter-generator, the Leon's 1.0-litre engine has its work cut out with more than a tonne of caravan to pull. The 15.8sec 30-60mph time shows that overtaking will need patience and a long straight road, but the Leon stays the right side of being underpowered.
In everyday driving, it handles really well, too. Okay, it's not quite as playful as a Ford Focus, but it turns in keenly, has well weighted steering, and grips the road securely.
The flipside is a firmer ride than you get in a Volkswagen Golf, particularly at low speed, but the Leon is never harsh.
There's plenty of space inside the Leon, too; even the tallest of drivers should have no trouble getting comfortable, and there's enough room for adults to travel in the back without feeling cramped.
Finally, our practicality testers were impressed by the neatly installed retractable tow ball – not a feature you necessarily expect from a car at this price.
