The Skoda Elroq is our favourite electric car for towing a lightweight caravan, topping the score sheets of all five of our drivers.

Most importantly, it’s very stable – and so it should be when it weighs more than two tonnes. But even allowing for its high weight the Elroq is extremely secure at speed. There wasn’t so much as a twitch from the back of the car, even at speeds that wouldn’t be legal on public roads.

The Elroq has performance to spare, too, taking just 5.4sec to go from 30-60mph. There’s no hesitation, just an immediate response thanks to the single-speed gearbox and 286bhp.

Hill starts are straightforward, with no sign of strain or vibration. There was hardly any noise as the Elroq pulled to the top of the 1-in-6 slope. That said, it’s worth noting that our tests were conducted in the dry, and like most electric Skodas, this car is rear-wheel drive; if you want a 4x4 for improved traction in wet weather, you would need the Elroq vRS.

For day-to-day journeys, the 85 Elroq’s considerable power is more than enough. The car is both sharp to drive yet relaxing and comfortable, making it equally at home on B-roads and motorways.

In solo driving, the Elroq offers a competitive official range of 349 miles. That bodes well for a respectable distance while towing; as a guide, we’ve found range roughly halves while towing a caravan with an electric car.

Although one of the smaller models tested this year, the Elroq is very roomy inside. Adults can relax, whether they are travelling in the front or the back. And while our practicality judges couldn’t fit all their camping gear in the 470-litre boot, they awarded high marks for the excellent drop-down tow bar and electrics.

Our only hesitation in recommending the Elroq is the low towing capacity. Being restricted to no more than a tonne means it is only suitable for very light caravans and trailer tents. However, if that’s the type of camping unit you holiday with, the Elroq will tow it superbly.
