Toyota says drivers 'are' insured

Toyota has confirmed that drivers of its defective models 'are' still insured.

Worried drivers had been concerned that by knowingly driving a car that could be defective, they were in breach of the terms of their insurance.

However, a statement from the Association of British Insurers (ABI) said: 'The ABI confirms that motor insurance policies will continue to cover Toyota owners affected by the recall of certain models.

'Any claims will be dealt with in the normal way, in accordance with the terms and conditions of the policy. If they have not already done so, anyone who thinks they may be affected should contact their local Toyota dealer and follow its advice.'

Toyota has also said that should this reassurance not be enough for any insurers, its own insurance service would cover owners under the same terms as their existing policies.
