True MPG: best and worst city cars and small cars 2019
Which cars return the best fuel economy in the real world? Here we count down the city cars and small cars with the best True MPG figures – and reveal the least efficient model we've ever tested...
7. Kia Picanto 1.0**
Official mpg 62.8 True MPG 53.3 % difference 15.2%
The Picanto is one of the newest cars on this list, and went straight to the top of the city car class, thanks to its smart interior, tidy handling and surprising practicality. The 1.25-litre engine is our favourite, but this 1.0-litre is the most efficient.
6. Volkswagen Up 1.0 TSI 90
Official mpg 60.1 True MPG 53.7 % difference 10.6%
If you're looking for a small car with a premium interior, then Volkswagen's Up should suit you very well. Just bear in mind that it's the same as its Seat Mii and Skoda Citigo cousins but is the most expensive of the trio to buy. This Up feels more able to take on the motorway than the non-turbocharged option and responds quickly from low revs. The downside? It's only available in range-topping High Up or Up Beats specification, so you'll need to spend more to buy it.
5. Seat Ibiza 1.0 TSI
The new Ibiza is the best small car on the market today, offering tidy handling, a comfortable ride, low running costs and a surprisingly spacious and practical interior. It really has no major weakness.
