True MPG: best coupes, convertibles and sports cars 2018
What Car?'s True MPG tests show what you can really expect from a car. Here we reveal the most efficient coupés, convertibles and sports cars we've tested so far...
3. Audi TT Coupé 1.8 TFSI Sport
Official fuel economy: 47.1mpg; True MPG: 40.4mpg; Shortfall: 14.3%
No car has won more What Car? awards than the Audi TT, and the latest version is the best yet; it's brilliant to drive, beautifully built and effortless to live with. Go for the 1.8-litre petrol model, and it will even do more than 40mpg.
2. Fiat 124 Spider 1.4 Multiair 140
Official fuel economy: 44.1mpg; True MPG: 44.2mpg; Shortfall: -0.3%
The 44.2mpg that Fiat's 124 Spider managed in our True MPG test isn't just impressive for a convertible sports car, but slightly more than the official average. Buy a 124 and you also get peppy performance and a supple ride, while mid-range Lusso models come well equipped.
1. Mazda MX-5 2.0
Official fuel economy: 40.9mpg; True MPG: 47.9mpg; Shortfall: -17.1%
The MX-5 is closely related to the Fiat 124 Spider and actually more fun to drive, but instead of a turbocharged 1.4-litre engine it uses a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre. In official tests that makes it slightly less efficient. However, we found it actually averages 47.9mpg – 6mpg more than it acheived in government tests and 3.7mpg up on the Fiat's True MPG.
