Used bargain: Citroen C5

If you're after family transport on a tight budget, why not consider a used Citroen C5.

The C5 was never, and still isnt, our favourite as a new car. Fast-forward three years, though, and some steep depreciation has made it a bargain.

Three-year-old diesel cars with fewer than 40,000 miles on the clock are less than 7000, and if youre willing to accept more miles, expect prices closer to 4000.

Our favourite model is the 2.0 HDi VTR+. Its 136bhp is enough for when you need it, and fuel economy figures are kind. VTR+ trim comes with climate and cruise controls, all-round electric windows, alloy wheels, automatic lights and wipers, and dual-zone climate control.

The C5 wasnt without its faults, though. There are a lot of electrics on the C5, and they are known to suffer from problems. Check everything works perfectly and address any issues with the seller. The suspension is also a weak point. Listen out for juddering or knocking sounds.
