Used cars of the week: cheap Audi A1s

The Audi A1 was What Car? Car of the Year 2011 and now is making its way on to the used market in decent numbers.
The three-door, four-seater small car is stylish and well equipped. Buyers can choose from three petrol and two diesel engines; all versions are fun to drive and offer enough power to keep up with traffic, although our pick of the range is the 1.4 TFSI for its mix of performance and fuel economy.
Standard equipment includes air-conditioning, a CD player and electric windows. Mid-range Sport trim is our favourite because it adds Bluetooth and sports seats.
The A1's ride is firm but it's never uncomfortable. We'd avoid the S line trim as its ride is too harsh, but in our favourite Sport trim the balance is about right.
Adults will be very comfortable in the front seats but the rear seats are suitable for only short journeys because the seat backs are almost upright and headroom is limited by the sloping roof. Boot space is better than expected, though – it beats the Mini's capacity with the rear seats up or down.
Audi A1 problems
The infotainment system is very easy to use, but owners have reported issues. The most common problems are to do with the screen going blank and the Bluetooth system refusing to pair with phones. Make sure that the system works as it should before you buy.
Rattles coming from the boot have been traced to the locking mechanism. Inspect the lock and check that nothing has come loose. If you do hear a rattle a new lock could be required.
The front passenger seat can come off its rails when being adjusted. This is easy for Audi to repair but is worth checking when you take the car for a test drive.
Service intervals for the A1 are every 19,000 miles or every two years, while the timing belt needs to be changed after five years or 75,000 miles.
