Used Ford Mondeo covers most miles

The Ford Mondeo covers more miles on the UK's roads each year than any other used car, according to a new report from Warranty Direct.

With an average annual mileage of more than 15,000 miles, the Ford Mondeo beats its nearest rival the Volvo S80 by nearly 600 miles.

Not surprisingly, larger, more refined vehicles top the mileage chart, which was compiled from 50,000 of Warranty Direct's live policies on cars between three and 10 years old.

The Ford Mondeo and Volvo S80 were closely followed by the VW Passat and Audi A6 both of which cover more than 14,000 miles each year. The average annual mileage for motorists is around 12,000 miles.

Warranty Direct's research also reveals that despite the high annual mileage, the Ford Mondeo also topped the reliability table for the most-used cars, with only 15% of owners making a warranty claim the VW Passat in third position recorded a rate of 44%.

Small cars covered the fewest miles in the survey, with the Nissan Micra taking the title of Britain's least-used car covering an average of just 5580 miles a year.

Used superminis accounted for nine out the 10 least-used cars on Britain's roads. However, they also require less maintenance, with a collective average breakdown rate of 21%, which is in contrast to 34% for the most-used vehicles.
