Our verdict
Perhaps not surprisingly, this is a very close contest. In the end, it’s a narrow win for the Octavia, just as it was when we first tested these two cars back in 2015.
Both of these rugged estates are comfortable on-road daily drivers with decently low running costs, and yet are surprisingly skilled in off-road use and capable of towing fairly big loads. The Octavia wins by the tiniest of margins, mainly thanks to its roomier interior, more comprehensive standard kit list and more comfortable ride. The Leon does the job nearly as well and is a thoroughly decent car, but you’ll have to accept that it’s not quite as refined as the Octavia and you’ll also need to forgo a few luxuries. That said, if you did track down a good Leon, we wouldn’t blame you if your money went there.
