The medium van sector remains the battleground of the UK commercial vehicle market. It attracts the broadest mix of tradespeople, fleets and owner-operators, and small differences in running costs or usability can have a significant impact over time. For 2026, the Volkswagen Transporter takes the title because, rather than trying to reinvent the formula, it refines it and backs it up with the strongest ownership proposition in the class.

Under the skin, the Transporter shares its architecture, engines and suspension with last year’s winning Ford Transit Custom, and that’s a strong place to start. Its underpinnings set the benchmark for driving manners and day-to-day usability. Independent rear suspension gives it a level of ride comfort and composure that rivals such as the Citröen Dispatch, Peugeot Expert and Vauxhall Vivaro can’t match, particularly when running empty. It’s stable at motorway speeds, easy to manoeuvre in town and impressively quiet for a working vehicle.

Practicality remains at the heart of the package. Two body lengths offer competitive load volumes, payloads exceed 1.3 tonnes in the right configurations, and most models can tow up to 2.8 tonnes — figures that put it firmly at the sharp end of the segment. The load area is square, accessible and well thought through, while the cab provides a genuinely modern workspace. A large central touchscreen, digital instruments and a flat floor create an airy, usable environment, with excellent driving position adjustability and generous storage.

Where the Transporter moves ahead of its closest rivals — including its cousin from Ford — is in what happens beyond the showroom. Volkswagen includes five years of servicing, five years of MOT cover and five years of roadside assistance as standard. For small businesses and sole traders in particular, its ‘5+ Promise’ provides a level of built-in cost certainty and downtime protection that is hugely reassuring. While some other medium vans offer slightly lower prices or marginal payload advantages, few deliver the same level of long-term support without bringing additional cost.
