Judged on traditional practicality metrics the Ford Transit Custom PHEV is undoubtedly impressive, but what wins it this award is that it also offers greater versatility than its rivals...

WINNER: Electric Van - Best for Practicality

Ford Transit Custom PHEV

Priced from £36,395 Economy 78.4mpg CO2 emissions 66g/km Load space 6m3 Payload 1153-1195kg Power 118bhp Torque 262lb ft

The Transit Custom PHEV is a practical van in its own right: it can move more than one tonne, has a maximum load length of nearly 3.5m and comes in a range of bodies to suit plenty of customers need, but we reckon the PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid) version remains the most practical and versatile electrified van on the market by virtue of its dual-fuel, hybrid driveline.

You see, unlike a pure electric van, you get the benefit of zero-emission running in the city (35 miles of electric running to be precise) without having to go through the hassle of having to borrow a petrol or diesel van for longer journeys.

The LEVC VN5 plug-in hybrid also offers a similar level of flexibility, but it has to make do with a smaller volume (5.5m3 vs 6m3) and a smaller payload capacity (830kg vs 1130kg).

Factor in that the hybrid driveline might soon enable the PHEV Transit Custom to go into more places than a diesel van – using its ring-fencing electric-only drive mode to ensure that it complies with the strictest zero-emission city centre policies – and this hybrid van looks to offer the best of both diesel and electric worlds.
