WINNER: Medium Van - Best to Drive

Ford Transit Custom

Priced from £23,595  MPG 31.7-40.9mpg CO2 emissions 67-234g/km Load space 6-8.3m3 Payload 686-1460kg Power 103-183bhp Torque 228-306lb ft

There’s very little to dislike about the Ford Transit Custom, which is why it has sold so well in the UK since it was launched. Whether you are after an affordable, fuel-efficient model or a van that really stands out from the crowd, the Transit Custom delivers.

However, while it can comfortably transport high payloads and large volumes – being one of only a handful of medium-sized vans available with a high roof – the Transit Custom’s most impressive attribute is the way it drives.

From the fastest, 182bhp model, down to the entry-level 104bhp, it delivers comfortable and engaging handling, helped by steering worthy of a car. Then there are its smooth and quiet motors, with Ford’s 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel unit among the most capable of any commercial vehicle engine; it can even return up to 53.3mpg.

In a highly competitive sector where buyers are often torn between the desirable Volkswagen Transporter and more value-focused options such as the Citroën Dispatch, Peugeot Expert and Vauxhall Vivaro, nothing comes close dynamically.
