While other brands have made do with converting small cars into vans, Ford has embraced the compact van genre more whole-heartedly with the Transit Courier.
It may be based on the same underpinnings as the Ford Fiesta, but it has more than enough neat touches to stand out as a bespoke van that’s not only befitting of the Transit name, but also capable of making you think hard about whether you really need the larger Transit Connect.
The Courier is great to drive – almost as good in fact as the Fiesta Van, which perhaps isn’t surprising given how closely related the two are under the skin. What’s more, it combines exceptional practicality with comfort and style, featuring a driver-orientated interior and a far greater load space than any other offering in the sector.
It rivals the class best when it comes to running costs, too, whichever engine option you choose, while being relatively well equipped for the price, especially if you shop above the entry-level trim options.
Crucially, it also makes light work of operating in tight and congested urban areas, surely the natural habitat of a compact van, but is not overwhelmed by the motorway or the open roads of the countryside.
It is a true all-rounder of the class, then, helped considerably by offering the choice of a lively 1.0-litre Ecoboost petrol engine or economy-minded 1.5-litre Duratorq diesels, which deliver power and torque in an economical package.
