This is the new Volkswagen Golf GTI, revealed ahead of its official launch at the Geneva motor show next week.
The Mk7 Golf GTI is available in two variants: the regular GTI and GTI Perfomance. The regular GTI is powered by a 217bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine and sprints from 0-62mph in 6.5 seconds and has a top speed of 152mph.
In GTI Performance form, the 2.0-litre turbocharged engine produces 227bhp, gets from 0-62mph in 6.4 seconds and has a top speed of 155mph. It also gets larger brake discs and a limited-slip differential.
Both models come with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, while a six-speed DSG semi-automatic 'box is available as an option.
Manual versions of both variants return a claimed average economy of 47mpg and emit 139g/km of CO2. Standard GTIs with the DSG transmission average 44.1mpg and emit 148g/km, while auto versions of the GTI Performance do 43.5mpg with CO2 emissions of 149g/km.
Styling tweaks over the regular Golf include red brake calipers, twin chrome tailpipes, 18-inch alloys, smoked LED tail-lights, sports suspension and bi-xenon headlights.
Inside, the GTIs get traditional tartan-covered seats, red ambient lighting and a bespoke GTI steering wheel.
Prices haven't been confirmed, but we expect the standard three-door GTI to start at 25,845 and the five-door version to start at 26,500. We expect the DSG transmission to cost about 1400 and the Performance models to cost about 1000 more than the standard models. Order books open on March 26 with the first deliveries in June.
