Volkswagen Golf soft-top revealed
* Golf convertible sold alongside Eos * Canvas roof goes up and down in 10 seconds * On sale this summer...
Volkswagen will be able to offer fresh-air fiends hard- and soft-top convertibles this summer when a new Golf Cabriolet joins the recently refreshed Eos.
The cabriolet features an electro-hydraulically folding canvas top that goes up or down in less than 10 seconds.
As the soft roof takes up less space than the elaborate mechanism in the Eos, the Golf will also have more boot space. Previous Golf cabrios have had unsightly fixed roll hoops, but the new car will have hoops that spring up in the event of a potential roll-over crash.
Six direct-injection turbocharged petrol and diesel engines are available, although it isn't yet certain if theyll all be offered in the UK. Power outputs span 103 to 207bhp, while the most economical 1.6 diesel will comfortably top 60mpg with CO2 emissions of 117g/km.
As the Golf Cabrio is smaller and simpler than the Eos it is likely to cost less when it goes on sale some time in the summer. It's not the last chapter in the Golf-based convertibles story, though: a new soft-top Beetle will eventually be offered as well.
The car will be on display at the Geneva motor show next week.
