What Car? True MPG was launched in April 2012 and since then has been helping new car buyers find out the real-world economy of their chosen cars.

Using state-of-the-art testing equipment on real roads, realistic fuel economy can be measured. What Car? aims to test every car it drives on UK roads.

The majority of people searching the True MPG database are looking up diesel cars. 68% of all searches are for cars running on diesel. 28% of searches are for petrol, 3% are for petrol/electric hybrids and 1% for diesel/electric hybrids.

Fuel economy is an important factor for many car buyers, so the interest in diesel cars is to be expected as they offer higher mpg than petrol alternatives.

The most searched-for car is the Volkswagen Golf 1.6 TDI 105 Bluemotion followed closely by the BMW 320d. The Golf returned 51.8mpg during testing; respectable, but far off the claimed 68.9mpg. The BMW returned 54.8mpg, down from 61.4mpg claimed. Both cars are What Car? favourites.

All the cars in the top 10 run on diesel. Five of the top 10 are BMWs. The 320d is followed by the 520d Efficient Dynamics, the X3 xDrive20d SE, the 320d Efficient Dynamics and the 520d Touring M Sport.

The other cars in the top 10 are the Audi A4 2.0 TDIe 163 SE saloon, the Skoda Yeti 2.0 TDI CR SE Plus, the Citroen C3 1.4 e-HDi Airdream VTR+ and the Range Rover Evoque 2.2 SD4 Pure.

More models are being added to the True MPG database all the time. If the model that you were after wasnt there last time, head over there now and check to see if it has been added.
