Volvo V40

Britain’s safest used family cars for less than Β£15,000 have been named, with the Volvo V40 fitted with the optional Safety Pack topping the listings.

The cars were selected by safety experts Thatcham Research as part of a study into used car safety conducted by Co-Op Insurance.

All cars chosen have a five-star Euro NCAP rating, CO2 emissions of 120g/km or less and are available to purchase on the secondhand market for Β£15,000. They were then evaluated further on crash-worthiness, including ratings for adult, child and pedestrian protection and the availability of Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB).

What is AEB and how does it work?

The UK’s top 10 safest used family cars according to the study were:

1. Volvo V40 (2012)

2. Volkswagen Golf (2012)

3. Nissan Qashqai (2014)

4. Peugeot 308 (2013)

5. Vauxhall Astra (2015)
