VW announces frugal threesome

Volkswagen will unveil brand new Bluemotion versions of its Polo, Golf and Passat models at the Frankfurt motor show in two weeks' time.
The company claims that all three have class-leading fuel economy and CO2 emissions. At the heart of each car is a new common-rail diesel engine a 1.2 in the Polo and a 1.6 in the Golf and Passat.
Other fuel-saving technologies, such as an engine stop-start system, revised engine management software, regenerative braking and longer gear ratios, will also help lower emissions and stretch mpg figures.
The cars will get a sporty makeover, as VW attempts to further increase their appeal. The Golf and Passat Bluemotion will get bumpers and skirts from the sporty R-Line models, while the Polo will have a new grille, special alloy wheels and a tailgate spoiler.
World's most frugal five-seater
Volkswagen says that the Polo Bluemotion will average 85.6mpg and emit just 87g/km of CO2 the best figures for any supermini. They also claim that the Polo is the most economical five-seat car in the world.
The Golf averages 74.3mpg and has CO2 emissions of 99g/km, and the Passat 64.2mpg and 114g/km.
That means that the Passat Bluemotion which will be available as both a saloon and an estate has a theoretical range of almost 1000 miles.
All three cars will go on sale in the UK early in 2010, with prices and full specifications to be confirmed nearer the time.
