Although the Nissan Qashqai is no longer our favourite family SUV, it remains a sound proposition. If you choose wisely it's one of the more comfortable cars in the class, and the 138bhp 1.3-litre petrol engine really impresses. The Seat Ateca and Skoda Karoq have more room and are better to drive, but the Qashqai should still make it onto your shortlist.

Trim: Tekna

Tekna brings part-leather (heated front) seats, with power adjustment on the driver's side, LED headlights, a self-parking system, a heated windscreen, a BOSE sound system and adaptive cruise control. It’s really expensive, though, and comes with 19in wheels that ruin ride comfort.

Engine: 1.5 dCi [115]

The 113bhp 1.5-litre diesel is worth a look if you’re a high-mileage driver. It isn’t particularly quick in terms of outright acceleration, but it delivers its power smoothly and is pretty gutsy from low revs, so never feels frustratingly tardy. It will also prove the most frugal of the Qashqai's engines. If you need more shove or four-wheel drive, look out for the 1.7-litre diesel arriving in 2019.
